Print World Cup: Santos Brasil conducts operation for Extra

Logistics

05/08/2010

According to the Brazilian Supermarkets Association (Abras), with the help of the World Cup, the market will probably close 2010 with an 8% growth compared to 2009. To meet this demand driven by the world championship, Santos Brasil prepared a special logistic scheme to one of its clients, Extra, Pão de Açúcar group brand. The task was to place 310 thousand customized soccer balls in the group stores, as one of the items for the games celebration.

With one of the most complete operational structures for integrated logistics of the country, counting with port terminals for containers and logistics operations, Santos Brasil received the balls, which are imported, through Tecon Santos (largest Brazilian containers terminal, located at the Santos Port). Then, the products were sent to the Customs Industrial Logistics Center (CLIA), located at the Santos Brasil Logística unit, in the same city, and then transported by the Company's trucks to the Company Distribution Center (CD), in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), were they were assembled by a team with more than 40 employees. For the operation, the company prepared a demountable warehouse with 750 square feet, with two compressors to fill the balls - a work which took 20 business days, timeframe required by the client.

This service to Extra illustrate very well the way Santos Brasil intends to take more and more this integrated logistics model to its clients. Since 2008, with the purchase of Mesquita, currently Santos Brasil Logística, the company started to offer all the services of the logistics chain. The purpose is to gain synergy and facilitate the service to the client, which can hire a single provider for the several services. This model is allowing the growth of the area (storage plus logistics) within the company, which in 2009 responded for 45.4% of the Santos Brasil gross income, reaching R$ 333.7 millions.  In the first quarter of this year, this percentage reached 49% of the income.
