Tecon Santos achieves 80.38 container movements per hour in August
03/09/2011
Tecon Santos, operated by Santos Brasil, reached its
highest ever productivity figure in August: an average of
80.38 MPH (container movements per hour) per ship, almost 40%
more than the 58.05 MPH recorded in January. All in all, a
total of 83,805 containers on 109 ships were handled in the period.
Since the beginning of the year, the terminal has been
beating successive productivity records, so much so that the
annual target of 70 MPH was achieved in May.
Another highlight in August was the vehicle terminal (TEV), which
handled 6,028 vehicles (3,828 loaded and 2,200 unloaded),
also a new record. This figure was achieved thanks to the
Brasilia Highway operation, which currently holds the Company
record for the largest operation with a single ship.
Washington Flores, head of Tecon Santos, attributes the team's
commitment and the investments in training and technological
upgrades as being chiefly responsible for the constant
increase in productivity. Throughout the 14 years that Santos
Brasil has operated the Tecon Santos public concession, it has
invested R$1.9 billion in the terminal. Of this total,
around R$800 million went to new technology and equipment
such as the super cranes, which can handle two 40-foot or four
20-foot full containers simultaneously; replacing the yard
handling equipment with rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs); and
substituting flatbed trucks with terminal tractors, specially
developed for transporting containers inside terminals. In
addition to reducing operating costs , these initiatives also had a
positive impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions.
"Tecon Santos's productivity and technology are on a
par with those of the top terminals in Europe , which in turn
are among the most efficient in the world. Our goal is to
continuously improve all our indicators and reach 100 MPH by
2015," declared Flores.
