Container handling grew by 16% in the quarter and 13.6% in the year; Consolidated EBITDA increased by 20.7% to R$551.7 million

Santos Brasil, a leading South American container handling company, recorded a milestone for the Brazilian port sector, handling more than 100,000 containers in less than a month at is operation at the Port of Santos.  As a result, the total volume for the month of August will be the highest registered among container terminals in Brazil. The total figure represents a 20% increase over August 2011 of the total handled by Tecon Santos.

Santos Brasil registered impressive results in the second quarter of 2012. The handling of containers in the terminals in which it operates (Tecon Santos - SP, Tecon Imbituba - SC and Tecon Vila do Conde- PA) increased 17.2% over the same period last year. The Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) reached a record  R$ 143.8 million, up 24.2% over the same period in 2011. The Vehicle Terminal also maintained its strong performance, with R$ 13.9 million in EBITDA, which was the result of higher revenue from import vehicles. The EBITDA forecast for 2012 remains between R$ 500 and R$ 550 million, with a margin between 41% and 43%.

Santos Brasil, a major container handling and logistics company, has begun using the Petrobrás BS-50 biofuel to power the truck fleet for its logistics operations. The company, which operates three container terminals in the ports of Santos (SP), Imbituba (SC) and Vila do Conde (PA), has logistics Distribution Centers in São Bernardo do Campos (SP) and in the neighborhood of Jaguaré, in the city of São Paulo.

Santos Brasil's container handling productivity records in recent months could not have been achieved without  strong efforts to attract, select, hire, train and retain skilled professionals. Between January and July 2011, the Company offered 124,000 training hours, equivalent to 35 hours per employee, 51% more than last year. Period investments in training came to R$2.3 million, 77% more than in the entire year of 2010, allocated to language courses, training and education in logistics and port operations and leadership development, as well as technical and legal training.

According to Drewry Independent Maritime, aLondon-based  port sector consulting and publishung firm, Santos Brasil had the largest container-handling market share in South America in 2010 after being  ranked second in 2009.  The Company's  terminals (Tecon Santos - São Paulo,  Tecon Imbituba -Santa Catarina and Tecon Vila do Conde - Pará) handled 1,412,944 TEUs, representing 7.7% of the South American total. The survey also showed that revenue from container handling in South America was 15% higher in 2010 than in 2009.

As of today, Santos Brasil's light-vehicle fleet will be fueled by ethanol. The fleet has 58 vehicles used for the transportation of employees and materials, inspections and other internal services in Tecon Santos and the Company's logistics units (customs logistics and industrial centers in Santos and Guarujá, distribution centers in São Bernardo and Jaguaré - SP). Previously, gasoline had been used, although the entire fleet already consisted of flex-fuel vehicles, which enabled the change. The idea is to reduce CO₂ emissions and sugarcane ethanol's great advantage is that it virtually eliminates them. According to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), this measure will reduce emissions by up to 73%. The idea was suggested by a Santos Brasil employee in June of this year during Environment Week, when the Company promoted an internal campaign to raise awareness.
