Santos Brasil doubles productivity in rail terminals with the new Twin Lift feature

23/11/2016

Santos Brasil has doubled the productivity of its railroad operations by simultaneously loading and unloading two 20-foot containers at Tecon Santos - the largest and most efficient terminal in Latin America. The pioneering innovation in the Santos complex was made possible by the development of a RTG (Rubber-tire Gantry Crane) feature called Twin Lift. The major advantage of the Twin Lift is to service trains within a smaller space of time (a smaller window). Now, a train carrying fifty 20-foot containers is operated in about an hour and a half, which previously took three hours on average. The new system was customized by Santos Brasil´s Technology, Maintenance and Operations teams, and also features individual container weighing capacity. "Operating in railroads with higher operational productivity has a direct impact on export cargo because after weighing, it is already possible to initiate customs clearance for subsequent shipment", said Santos Brasil Port and Logistics Operations Executive Director Ricardo Molitzas. For clients who utilize railroad sidings for sending or receiving their cargo, the innovation also means being able to rely on a more agile operation with the same quality and state-of-the-art equipment. "We increased train flow at Tecon Santos, we move the cargo more efficiently, and it is the client who always benefits at the end of the logistics chain", says the executive. Currently, a monthly average of 1,150 20-foot containers is being handled at the four Tecon Santos railroad sidings. The expectation is to reach 1,500 units/month by the end of the year. The company is also looking at the possibility of operating a second RTG with the Twin Lift feature in the coming months. For three years now, logistics operation by rail has been one of Santos Brasil´s focus points. The company has leveraged the competitive advantage of operating the only terminal with four rail sidings in the Port of Santos, as well as the country´s scenario of opportunities in the railway sector, and is now offering attractive costs to clients. It is also worth noting that the railway modal has established itself as a strong alternative for reducing traffic on the roads and on the accesses to the Port of Santos. To illustrate this, each railcar can carry up to four 20-foot containers, enough to take four trucks out of the streets. In addition, it reduces operating risk and the level of CO2 emissions in the environment by up to 70%, and is directly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development objectives and the Santos Brasil Sustainability Policy.

Santos Brasil reports 16,9% growth in total number of handled containers in Q316

09/11/2016

Santos Brasil reported a 16.9% growth in the total number of containers handled at its three terminals - Santos (São Paulo State), Imbituba (Santa Catarina State) and Vila do Conde (Pará State) - in the third quarter 2016, totaling 275,682 containers. Accumulated volume growth through September was 11.3%. At Tecon Santos, South America´s largest and most efficient container terminal, 251,998 containers were handled in Q316, up 15.5% from the terminal´s handling figures in Q315 and a 10.4% increase in the accumulated volume for the year. Santos Brasil´s market share in the Port of Santos reached 39.5% (6.4 percentage points higher than in Q315). Growth at Tecon Santos was partially due to the volume generated by two shipping services operating routes to South America¿s West coast and Africa, which began docking at the terminal at the end of 2015, and also to the increase in number of containers from shared navigation systems that dock at Tecon Santos. These services now include new ship owners in their composition. At Tecon Vila do Conde, growth in total containers handled in Q316 was 50.9%, totaling 16,956 units. The increase was recorded in both long-haul and coasting navigation operations, resulting from navigation services that began operating routes to Europe and the Caribbean in January. Accumulated growth is 37.1%. Tecon Imbituba showed a 3.6% growth in handled container volume in the period, driven by the increase in coasting navigation operations that accounted for 94.9% of the movements in the quarter. Consolidated volume growth in Q316 was mainly recorded in long-haul import, export and transshipment operations, which increased 18.1%, 22.0% and 15.1%, respectively. Coasting navigation operations generated 23.2% of the total volume handled in the period, and transshipment accounted for 32.6%. The full-empty container mix remained stable compared to Q216. Full containers corresponded to 76.8% of the movement in this quarter. As a result of the market share gain in Santos, the Company´s bonded warehousing operations in the Port Terminals segment grew 22.8%. Santos Brasil´s consolidated net revenue was R$ 222.6 million in the third quarter. Year-to-date totaled R$ 622.1 million. In the period, the company showed a 5.4% reduction in the average cost per container handled/stored in the port terminals in comparison with what was recorded in the same period in the previous year. EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) adjusted for non-recurring effects was R$ 31.3 million, with a 14.1% margin. Santos Brasil closed Q316 with cash balance of R$ 164.7 million and net debt of R$ 66.0 million, equivalent to 0.7x adjusted EBITDA of the last 12 months.

An international reference in security

08/11/2016

Santos Brasil welcomed federal police representatives from Belgium, Bolivia and Peru at Tecon Santos - the largest container terminal in South America, for an interchange in port security matters. During the visits, which took place in the second half of the year, a presentation was made on the practices, structure, indicators and the prevention model adopted in the terminal. For the Santos Brasil Property Security Manager Anderson Fagundes, the presence of international officials at Tecon is the recognition of an intense and innovative work that began many years ago. ¿Our objective is to act in a preventive manner in order to anticipate possible losses and maintain a high level of security. Such a management model makes us a reference in the matter, both domestically and internationally¿, he points out. In addition to international meetings, the company was visited in 2016 by representatives of the Brazilian Navy and officials from the National Commission for Public Security in Ports, Terminals and Waterways (Conportos) and the State Commission for Public Security in Ports, Terminals and Waterways (Cesportos).

Santos Brasil offers financial education course

22/09/2016

Seeking to assist its employees in controlling their expenses in hard economic times, Santos Brasil is organizing a financial education course. Tomorrow (23), the company will bring together 30 people at Tecon Santos - the largest container terminal in South America - to offer tips on how to organize personal finance. The course is an initiative of the Finance and Compensation & Benefits areas. It is administered in a single three-hour module during office hours, and teaches that with small changes in habits, it is possible to make a more conscientious use of money. "Our goal is to show that by adopting a new behavior, such as buying only what is really needed, going out without the credit card, and giving the right destination to saved money, will reeducate us financially", said the HR and Administration Director Alcino Therezo Junior. The idea emerged with the worsening economic recession, when there was an increase in applications for payroll loans. The first test was made on September 14, and positive employee feedback led to scheduling new classes for October. The Benefits analyst Aline Miranda says that the content made her rethink her spending and organize her planning. "This course has proved that we can change the way we manage our daily lives, financially guiding our plans and dreams", she says. Due to high demand, the company is already organizing a new module to address investments. According to estimates of the Credit Protection Service (SPC Brasil) and the National Confederation of Shopkeepers, the number of Brazilians with bad credit rating reached 58.8 million in August.

Santos Brasil joins BM&FBOVESPA´S Novo Mercado effective August 22

17/08/2016

Santos Brasil concluded today its migration to the BM&FBovespa Novo Mercado, and announces that as of August 22, its shares will already be traded in the stock exchange´s segment of companies with more advanced corporate governance levels. The common shares issued by Santos Brasil will be traded under the STBP3 ticker. The trading day of August 19 will be the last in which the preferred shares and Units will still be available to the financial market at BM&FBovespa´s Level 2 segment. With the migration, Santos Brasil - a reference in container operations - becomes part of the select group of companies that voluntarily adopt additional corporate governance practices to those required by the Brazilian legislation. These practices include the implementation of a set of corporate rules that expand the rights of minority shareholders, and an even more transparent and comprehensive information disclosure policy. In the Novo Mercado, all of the company´s preferred shares were converted into common shares at a 1 to 1 ratio. With this, all shareholders will have the same rights and may also vote on all matters discussed in company meetings, as well as be entitled to the possibility of receiving interest on capital, in addition to dividends. The migration gives more power to minority shareholders and raises the legal security of those shareholders to the Bovespa´s highest level. In being listed in BM&FBovespa´s highest corporate governance segment, the company has its perception of risk reduced and has an even higher reliability in the market. This recognition leads to greater investor interest in its shares, and the resulting valuation and increased liquidity of its shares. It also positively impacts the company´s ability to obtain financing at better rates. To Santos Brasil President Antonio Carlos Sepúlveda, the conclusion of this process strengthens the company´s commitment to the highest standards of transparency and governance, making it even stronger and more competitive. The migration is taking place at a particularly important moment for Santos Brasil. The company is preparing to invest R$ 1.276 billion in Tecon Santos, the largest and most efficient container terminal in South America. The project will enable adapting the Terminal´s infrastructure to the size of the new vessels that will call at the port of Santos, efficiently meeting the expected demand as of 2019, and contributing for its customers to be more competitive in their markets.

Initial assessment of the simulation at th Port of Santos is positive

13/09/2016

The initial data on the largest firefighting simulation ever held at the Port of Santos show a positive balance of the initiative. According to the PAM (Mutual Aid Plan), response times to the simulated incident training action carried out this morning at the Santos Brasil container terminal on the left bank of the Santos port complex, were very good. The simulation began with the quick reaction of the operator of an RTG (a gantry crane for handling containers in the yard), who within 5 seconds informed the Santos Brasil monitoring team that there was an emergency. This enabled the company to initiate its response plan and bring the entire incident quickly under control, deploying the proper intervening departments. Within 10 seconds, the Occupational Safety and Security teams were called to assess the severity of the incident. In three minutes, the company´s civil firefighter made his assessment and, in six minutes, the rescue of the first victim began. In eight minutes, Santos Brasil ordered the terminal to be evacuated, which was completed in 19 minutes and involved 323 employees. The second victim of the simulation, an operator 23 meters high up in the RTG, received first aid from a Santos Brasil health professional in seven minutes. Firefighters then took over to rescue the operator over a zip line. The chemical involved in the leak that triggered the simulation was immediately identified, and a spreadsheet was generated for locating other nearby containers with products that could potentially compound the situation. Once a container with such characteristics was identified, the planning began for removing it, which took place in 54 minutes. The Fire Department arrived at the terminal nine minutes after it was called, and began fighting the fire with water. A Maritime Fire Group vessel docked at the terminal in 22 minutes. A PAM meeting coordinated by the São Paulo State Port Authority (Codesp) this morning included representatives from 20 organizations, including the Fire Department, Civil Defense, Ibama, Cetesb, the City, Antaq, Internal Revenue Service, and the Federal Police for evaluating the simulation. About 250 people were involved during the entire action, and about a thousand were affected. The final report on the simulation will be delivered to Codesp.

Santos Brasil closes Q216 with a 7.4% growth in containers handled

05/08/2016

Santos Brasil closed the second quarter of 2016 with a 7.4% growth in operated volume, totaling 245,074 containers handled at its three terminals - Santos (SP), Imbituba (SC) and Vila do Conde (PA). Year-on-year growth through June was 8.4%, mainly driven by the positive performance of operations at Tecon Santos and Tecon Vila do Conde. In the largest and most efficient container terminal in South America, 222,586 containers were handled in Q216, exceeding the terminal´s performance in Q215 by 5.0%. Year-on-year growth in Tecon Santos was 7.6%. The company´s market share in the Port of Santos was 39.1% (4.2 percentage points higher than in the same period last year). This result was partially driven by the volume of two navigation services that operate on routes to the West Coast of South America and Africa, which began mooring in late 2015. Maintaining its upward trend observed since last year, Tecon Vila do Conde handled 16,946 containers in Q216, a volume 65.4% higher than the terminal´s volume in Q215. YoY growth in 2016 is 32.9% in both long-haul and coasting navigation. Both operations showed higher operating performance due to navigation services that began operating on the route to Europe and the Caribbean in late January. In the same period, Tecon Imbituba showed a 6.8% lower volume, due to a decrease in the handling of long-haul containers. On the other hand, the Santa Catarina terminal recorded a 35.5% growth in its coasting navigation operations, which now account for most of the volume handled in Q216. Consolidated volume growth in Q216 was recorded mainly in export and transshipment operations. Coasting navigation operations accounted for 22.3% of the containers handled in the period, and transshipment accounted for 32.6%. The mix of full-empty containers showed recovery, totaling 76.9% of full containers in Q216, compared to 74.1% in Q215. The Company´s consolidated net revenue totaled R$ 202.3 million in the second quarter. During the period, the Company´s recurrent costs and expenses decreased by 0.8% and 3.7% respectively. Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) for non-recurring items was R$ 15.2 million, with a 7.5% margin. The Company closed Q216 with a R$ 173.3 million cash surplus and a net debt of R$ 90.5 million, equivalent to 0.8x the adjusted EBITDA in the last 12 months.
